The Improbables

Welcome to the Autumn '10 schedule for the EGTG's The Improbables.

The Improbables is the Improv Group operating as part of the Edinburgh Grad's Theatre Group. We enjoy Improv as a way of improving our stage skills and as an enjoyable, lively, funny thing in itself. The Improbables regularly stage Cabaret shows and longer pieces, usually in the Pleasance Cabaret Bar. Amongst our recent successes was last December's Improvised Pantomine. We've recently been joined for sessions by professional Improvisers from New York. We meet on a Wednesday evening in Buccleuch Place, near Edinburgh University.

We welcome new members, whether you are an experienced actor or improviser or a complete novice we welcome your input and energy.

If you interested in joining please contact us through (Gordon which is the best email address to use?) You can also find us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.

The group is run as a collective; we're small and friendly enough to be able to make most of our plans in the pub. This term we will be dividing our sessions into Play Shops and Work Shops.

  • Wednesday 1st September - Work Shop - The Term Ahead and Skills Refresher
  • Wednesday 8th September - Play Shop - Welcome Back to the Tin of Destiny
  • Wednesday 15th September - Work Shop - subject TBA
  • Wednesday 22nd September - Play Shop
  • Wednesday 29th September - Work Shop - subject TBA
  • Wednesday 6th October - Play Shop
  • Wednesday 13th October - Work Shop - subject TBA
  • Thursday 14th October - Preparation for the Show
  • Wednesday 20th October - Play Shop
  • Tuesday 26th October - Preparation for the Show
  • Wednesday 27th October - Preparation for the Show
  • Thursday 28th October - Halloween Show

After this point, the group will decide on the total number of shows to prepare (there is a possibility of two shows, depending on the number of new members that join) as well as who will and will not be participating in the shows. If you are wanting to participate in the show, it is important that you be available for the last 3 work sessions. Any new members will be required to have attended all 5 of the skill sessions as well as the last 3 work sessions.

The work sessions will be scheduled as follows:

  • Wednesday, October 21
  • Wednesday, October 28
  • Wednesday, November 18
  • Wednesday, November 25
  • Wednesday, December 2

Play Shops are sessions where we explore the fun of Improvisation. Play Shops are informal and focused on enjoying the Improv Games and each others company whilst practising the skills of the Improviser. Think of Play Shops as the Improv equivalent of a kick around. We'll be using a variety of devices to decide which games we play. Our favourite tool is the Tin of Destiny, a Random Improv Game Generator which uses patented Lucky Dip technology to generate a game for our talented Improvisers to play.

Work Shops are more focused sessions. Each one will lead by one or more members of the group and we will focus on learning new skills or practising some old ones. Topics will be decided over the summer but might include Characterisation and Accents, Stagecraft, Introducing or Creating New Games, Working with Status or Generating Spontaneity. In Work Shops we'll look to hone our skills and improve ourselves as Improvisers and Actors.

Each term we work towards one or more shows. There is no commitment to take part in a show.

The Improbables will be staging a Halloween themed show on Thursday, 28th October in the Pleasance Cabaret Bar.

The group will meet at 24 Buccleuch Place (Graduate Association Offices) at 7:30pm and will run until approximately 10:00.
